Making Rock Candy, A Last Ditch Effort

This is my first blog post so be forgiving.  I'm new at this.

Well, summer is coming to an end.  My three boys are all about to start full time school and I am about to return to a full time job.  So many changes in the Gardner family.  I am not going to lie to you all, leaving my position as a stay at home mom has me  pressured to make this summer count.  I also have to admit that I have been totally lazy with my ideas.  This week I thought, "What's easy to do and will give my kids lasting memories?"  The answer?  Homemade rock candy.  Only 2 downsides, it took about five pounds of sugar and I gave myself a sugar burn.  The results?  Three kids asking every 20 minutes if they're done yet.  No, seriously, the kids loved mixing food coloring for different color rock candies and they are super excited to see the end result.  My guilt is also lessened because we spent quality time together and learned something in the process!  Learned a few somethings in fact.  We learned about crystal formation, making a solution and not to talk to mommy while she is handling boiling syrup.

This is the website I used for directions.  http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/rockcandy.php

We cutesied things up with food coloring and mason jars.  Besides, it's what we had on hand.
